An expert workshop on the role of greenhouse gases in the climate system will be held in Orvieto, Italy, on 10-13 November 1997. The workshop, sponsored and co-organized by the Community's specific research programme in the field of Environment and Climate, will address the state-of-the-art in the field, key issues and results obtained by the European research teams funded by the Commission.

The aim of the workshop is to discuss gaps in present scientific knowledge with regard to greenhouse gases and to identify future research priorities at the European level, in particular in light of the preparation of the Fifth Framework Programme.

In addition, the workshop will aim to enhance the exchange of information between the research community and policy makers in view of the Third Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), to be held in Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997.
