"Telematics for Libraries" at the Frankfurt Bookfair
There is a natural, traditional relationship between libraries and the book trade. The "Telematics for Libraries" sector of the European Commission, which fosters research and development projects concerned with library networking and related services, has, since the beginning, addressed the need to modernize this traditional relationship and create new types of alliances and dialogue between libraries, publishers and other representatives of the book trade. It is therefore no accident that the sector's work programme addresses electronic links between libraries and publishers/suppliers for acquisition and distribution of materials and data as well as services for the acquisition and supply of materials to libraries. As a result, a number of projects are paving the way for new approaches in this area.
At the Bookfair a number of these projects will exhibit their results which are now available for the publishing and library community. The sector's project officers and programme representatives will also be available for discussion.
In the interest of wide dissemination, the sector will have a double presence at the Bookfair. Not only will it be present at DG XIII's stand in Hall 4, but it will also have a space at the International Booksellers and Librarians Centre (IBLC) (Hall 9.2) where a number of projects will be demonstrated.
In addition, a seminar on the relationship between libraries and electronic publishing, "Of Books and Bytes: Libraries and Electronic publishing", will be held on 16 October 1997. This will be chaired by Ms. Ariane Iljon of the European Commission (DGXIII/E-4), and introduced by Mr. Arnoud de Kemp (Springer Verlag) (International Centre, Hall 9.1 E 902 from 14.00 to 15.30 hours).
The Seminar will focus on how libraries and electronic publishers can work together to benefit from the potential of electronic publishing, as well as on the main issues that are involved (copyright, standards, billing, etc.). There will be a presentation of projects that are exploring new ways of cooperation between publishers and libraries, thereby creating a mutual understanding of key issues and a cooperative platform to address them jointly.
Projects to be presented will include:
- BIBLINK: Linking Publishers and National Bibliographic Services, presented by Ross Bourne (British Library);
- EDILIBE II: Electronic Document Interchange for Libraries and Booksellers in Europe, presented by Phil Coles (B.H. Blackwell Ltd.);
- IMPRESS: Implementation Maintenance and Promotion of the EDILIBE/EDITEUR Standards Sets, presented by Friedemann Weigel (Otto Harrassowitz Buchhandlung und Antiquariat);
- EUROPA MMM: Remote and Online Publication of Multimedia, presented by Rosemary Altoft (John Wiley & Sons);
- ECUP+: European Copyright User Platform, presented by Barbara Schleihagen (EBLIDA).
