Building the Global Information Society for the 21st Century
The conference will examine questions relating to the creation of standards for the Information Society and is a response to the recognition, by G7 Ministers, of the importance of promoting interoperability to further develop the Global Information Society (GIS).
The aim of the event is to provide an open forum for the essential market players in the Information Society to exchange views regarding actual and potential applications, and to identify factors leading to their successful and rapid implementation. It will also explore new ways to facilitate the development of new products, markets and applications, and investigate existing standards (voluntary and mandatory) and related technical regulations.
The conference will be opened by Dr. Martin Bangemann, European Commissioner responsible for industrial policy, information technology and telecommunications. A number of Ministers of the G7 countries will also address the opening session.
Four major themes will be addressed during the conference. These will be explored in parallel workshops on the second day of the event, with each participating region taking a lead role in coordinating one of the themes:
- Theme 1: Electronic Commerce (US) - Covering topics such as banking, financial services, teleshopping and trade;
- Theme 2: Services to the public (Europe) - Discussing information services, libraries, museums, distance welfare services, education, tele-medecine and intelligent transportation telematic systems;
- Theme 3: Individual use (Canada) - Focusing on interactive entertainment, tele-learning and the provision of information and communications;
- Theme 4: Communications infrastructure interoperability (Japan) - including statements from users, manufacturers and service providers, on technical convergence and related policy issues, and contributions from various global standards organizations.
The results of these workshops will be summarized and presented to all Conference delegates for discussion in the plenary session on the third and final days of the event. In addition, an open discussion forum on these themes has been launched on the World Wide Web.
