A training course on "Decision support for off-site emergency management in the early phase of a nuclear accident" will take place in Karlsruhe, Germany, from 3 to 7 November 1997. The computer-based course is organized by Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, with support from the European Commission.

The course is aimed at those with a basic knowledge of radiation protection wishing to develop or improve their skills in the area of off-site emergency response to nuclear accidents. Participants will be trained in assessing and evaluating the off-site radiological situation following a nuclear accident; finding alternatives of timely and effective countermeasures; and preparing decisions on alternatives.

Particular attention will be given to accidents entailing the release of radioactive material into the atmosphere, although the principles addressed are applicable to other types of nuclear accident. The course will focus on the early phase of an accident, when decisions on sheltering, evacuation, distribution and intake of iodine tablets need to be taken, and warnings related to the consumption of contaminated food and feedstuffs need to be issued.

A special feature of the course will be its use of the real-time on-line decision support system (RODOS) to complement presentations and discussions. In a variety of practical sessions, participants will apply the knowledge gained from the lectures by evaluating a variety of accident scenarios using RODOS.
