A major European conference on "Energy management - The role of regions and cities" will be held in Lyon, France, on 24-26 November 1997. The conference, organized by the European Commission (DG XVII), in collaboration with the Committee of the Regions, is aimed at approximately 200 political and socio-economic decision makers.

The aim of the conference is to increase awareness, among these key decision makers, of the importance of decentralized actions in the field of energy - in particular those in favour of energy efficiency and the promotion of renewable energies. It will also aim to demonstrate the positive impact of such actions for lasting local development.

The conference will be followed by a seminar bringing together the 140 urban, regional and insular agencies specialized in energy management, created within the framework of the Community's SAVE programme.
