European Workshop on Library Statistics

A European workshop on library statistics, "From quantity to quality: collection, analysis and use of statistics for libraries", will be held in Luxembourg on 9-10 December 1997. The workshop, organized by the "Telematics for Libraries" sector of the Community's Telematics Applications programme, is aimed primarily at suppliers and users of library statistics.
A European approach to consolidating library statistics is in preparation - the LIBECON 2000 support measure. This aims to develop and maintain a database of statistics on library activities and associated costs in European countries. Initiatives by other major international organizations such as UNESCO, IFLA, ISO and the EU's own EUROSTAT office will also be taken into account.
The workshop is designed to provide an opportunity for the main players involved to discuss cooperation so as to ensure consensus on the collection, analysis and use of library-related statistics.
Attendance at the workshop is free, but as places are limited, participation will be by invitation only. Applications will be considered on the basis of the applicant's expected contribution and country representation.
