Research for the protection of cultural heritage

The first European conference on research for the protection of cultural heritage will take place in Rome, Italy, on 18 and 19 December 1997. The conference is organized by the Italian National Research Council (CNR) with support from the Community's Environment and Climate research programme.

The aim of the event is to promote the involvement of European industry in research for the protection of cultural heritage; to enhance industrial participation, particularly of SMEs, in the development and assessment of methodologies and technologies for the conservation of cultural heritage; to promote research networking and technology transfer in related sectors (building, construction, engineering, products, equipment, museum technologies); and to encourage awareness among national and local administrations and public and private organizations responsible for the maintenance of cultural heritage in Member States.

The main conference sessions will be as follows:

- Protection of cultural heritage objects inside museums, galleries, churches and libraries;
- Diagnostics and conservation materials for cultural heritage objects;
- Diagnostics and conservation of monument and historic building materials;
- Diagnostics and conservation of monument and historic building structures.
