A major public conference on the future of electronic procurement in the European Union will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 8-9 December 1997. The conference, "Electronic procurement - Follow up to the Green Paper", is being organized by the European Commission' SIMAP (Système d'Informations pour les Marchés Publics) project as part of the follow-up to the Commission's Green Paper on "Public procurement in the European Union: Exploring the way forward".

Published in November 1996, the Green Paper launched a wide ranging debate on how best to exploit the opportunities provided by the opening up of public procurement markets. The conference is intended to provide a Forum for open discussion with all those concerned before the final conclusion and summing up of the consultation process. Following the conference, and based on its outcome, the Commission will then proceed with the elaboration of its action plan for moving the European procurement regime and practice into the information age.

The conference will be addressed, among others, by Mr. Mario Monti, Commissioner responsible for the Internal Market and Financial Services and Mr. John Mogg, Director General for Internal Market and Financial Services. Other speakers will include high-level industry representatives and a representative from the US Office of Federal Procurement Policy.
