A conference on "Renewable energies technologies and strategies in Central and Eastern European countries" will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 25-27 May 1998. The conference, which is being organized by the European Commission within the framework of the Community's JOULE/THERMIE programme for RTD in the field of non-nuclear energy, will bring together leading figures in the development of renewable energy technologies and policies from both the EU and the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs).

The aim of the event is to stimulate the diffusion of knowledge about the technical progress achieved in the field of renewable energies, and to provide a forum for discussion on the issues, perspectives and policies allowing wider implementation of renewable energy sources in the CEECs. The conference programme will focus on the following main objectives:

- To assess the major results arising from collaborations supported by the JOULE/THERMIE and PECO/COPERNICUS programmes;
- To identify avenues for future RTD work of relevance for wider implementation of renewable energies in the CEECs, including opportunities for future joint initiatives;
- To pave the way for the definition and implementation of appropriate strategies for a wider implementation of renewable energy technologies able to provide cost-effective energy services in the CEECs.
