A colloquium on telecommunications in Europe entitled "What organization of the market is required?" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 11 December 1997. The event is organized and chaired by Mr Fernand Herman and Mr. Alan Donnelly, both Members of the European Parliament's Committee on Economic Affairs and Industry.

The morning session will look at the internal telecommunications market in Europe. Topics to be covered will include the development of the market, and its effects on existing operators and new entrants. The effects on end-users and on employment will be also discussed during this session.

The second session will look at how the new market can be regulated. The impact of new applications and technologies, and the increasing convergence of hitherto distinct technologies will be discussed. Existing regulation policies will be outlined and then the perspectives for regulation after 1999 will be debated, in the light of the needs of operators.

Speakers at the conference will include representatives of European telecoms operators and regulators, as well as senior Commission officials. A keynote speech will be given by Mr. Robert Verrue, Director-General for Telecommunications, information market and exploitation of research (DG XIII), while the closing address will be given by Commissioner Mario Monti, responsible for the Internal Market.
