Research for the protection of cultural heritage - Opportunities for European enterprises
Europe's rich cultural heritage is constantly at risk from environmental effects, natural deterioration, and even misguided attempts at preservation and restoration. Since 1986, the European Union has supported the largest international research programme on the effects of the environment on cultural heritage. The prime objective of this European conference is to promote the involvement of European industry in research in this field, and particularly to encourage SMEs to participate in the development and assessment of methodologies and technologies for cultural conservation.
The conference also aims to promote research networking and technology transfer in related sectors such as building and construction, engineering, products, equipment, and museum technologies, and to encourage awareness among national and local administrations and public and private organizations responsible for the maintenance of cultural heritage in Member States.
The main topics of the conference will include:
- The protection of cultural heritage inside museums, galleries, churches and libraries: assessing the effects of tourism and the most appropriate technologies for showcases, lighting, air-conditioning, etc.;
- Diagnostics and conservation materials for cultural heritage objects (books, sculptures, etc.);
- Diagnostics and conservation of monuments and historic building materials, including the effects of biological deterioration and treatments such as laser cleaning and water repellents;
- Diagnostics and conservation of monuments and historic building structures, including reinforcement and preventive techniques for the protection of masonry and wooden structures.
Research for the protection of cultural heritage will be an important part of the forthcoming Fifth Framework Programme's "key action" on the City of Tomorrow. The conference will also provide an insight into future opportunities within this context.
