The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the European Commission are organizing a major European conference on audiovisual industries and policies, to be held in Birmingham, UK, on 6-8 April 1998. The conference will be a highlight of the UK Presidency of the European Council of Ministers during the first half of 1998.

European countries have a major role to play in helping to shape the future of the audiovisual industry, not only in Europe but across the world. Well placed to take advantage of new technologies and enhance creative industries, Europe must, however, make sure that it has the policies and approaches that make the best of the new opportunities presented by recent technological developments.

The conference follows on from previous successful European events - the "Assises europeennes de l'audiovisuel" of 1989 and 1994 - and will provide a timely opportunity for industry leaders, experts and representatives from across the creative community to look at the new technologies and their impact and to propose new directions.
