The fifth European training course on carbohydrates will be held in Kerkrade, The Netherlands, from 14 to 19 June 1998. The course is organized by the Carbohydrate Research Foundation.

The course is addressed to scientists with a higher qualification in chemistry or a related subject such as biochemistry, chemical technology or food science. It will be of interest to PhD students, university and research institute staff and industrial researchers. All participants are invited to present their work during general poster sessions.

Plenary sessions will cover industrial applications, solutions and gels, synthesis, structure and physical-chemical properties, and analysis. Workshops will discuss the following topics:

- From renewables to chemicals and materials;
- Nomenclature of carbohydrates;
- Oligosaccharide databank;
- Life cycle inventory of surfactants - Petrochemical versus oleochemical raw materials.

Some financial support may be available for a small number of participants. Applicants for this financial assistance must agree to present a poster in the general session. Such applications must be received by 1 March 1998.
