A seminar on renewable energies, entitled "Changing present trends - renewable energies and the future of our island", will be held in Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife, Spain, on 3 and 4 February 1998. The event is organized by the Instituto Technologico y de Energias Renovables (ITER)) in collaboration with partners from Germany, Denmark and Ireland, with support from the EU's ALTENER programme for renewable energies.

The seminar stems from a project which has examined training issues within the renewable energies sector in Europe. One of the aims of the seminar is to demonstrate how issues of Europe-wide importance can be more effectively brought to the attention of local audiences, and better placed in the context of local needs and concerns.

This particular seminar will focus on the tourist sector and is targeted at decision-makers at regional and municipal levels, as well as those in the tourist and energy service industries. However, in addition, special efforts have been made to exploit this seminar as a forum at which the general public can obtain information on the various issues relating to the potential and immediate applications of renewable energy technologies in society.

Both presentations and round table discussions will make up the programme. The main topics featured in presentations will be as follows:

- Importance of renewables in the tourist and building sectors;
- The renewable energies market: prospects for job creation;
- Energy and environment action plans, awareness raising and public participation;
- Photovoltaics, wind energy, biogas and solar thermal technologies.
