A major European conference focusing on practical measures to encourage closer partnerships between industry and academia is being organized within the context of the UK's Presidency of the European Union. The conference, "Industry/academic links: Innovative partnerships for competitiveness", will take place in Coventry, UK, on 14-15 May 1998.

The aim of the conference will be to exchange best practice information and ideas about the mechanisms adopted by different countries to encourage more effective collaboration between industry and academia. This will be a high profile event which will bring together some of Europe's leading policy makers, academics and industrialists.

The conference programme is expected to comprise presentations from European governments, companies and research bodies on their practical experience of collaborative innovation supported by case studies and workshops to stimulate detailed discussion. Mrs. Edith Cresson, Commissioner responsible for research, innovation, education, training and youth, has been invited to give the keynote address and Mr. John Battle, the UK Minister for Science and Technology, will open the conference.

The conference is being organized by the Midlands Innovation Relay Centre.
