A seminar on the "Effective financing of renewable energy projects in developing countries and emerging economies" will be held in London, UK, on 27 February 1998. The seminar is organized by the Energy Technology Support Unit, UK (ETSU), a member of the EU's OPET network (Organizations for the Promotion of Energy Technologies).

The seminar is based on a study, carried out under the THERMIE component of the Community's JOULE/THERMIE programme for RTD in the field of non-nuclear energy, which reviewed 12 renewable energy projects in developing areas around the globe. The study also assessed the effectiveness of the financial mechanisms employed for the mass dissemination of project results, mainly stand-alone PV systems. Of particular interest are the innovative processes used to mitigate the perceived risks.

The seminar will outline ideas for novel financial mechanisms and their possible use in future projects.
