14 January 1998 - 14 January 1998

The Information Society Activity Centre (ISAC), has launched the idea of organizing a "European Information Society Day" at the end of 1998. The event, aimed at all European citizens, is intended to stimulate awareness of the opportunities offered by the Information Society and its impact on the daily lives of European citizens.

ISAC is presently inviting ideas and suggestions for the format and/or content of such an event. At present it is planned that the main event should take place in a Central European city (possibly Budapest). This should be networked with smaller events in other major cities across Europe.

The programme and format of the event should be as original as possible, stimulating a broad interest and participation across the EU, and allowing for some interactive participation of citizens and politicians. The following five key components should be included in the preparation of the IS Day Europe '98 programme:

- A short film illustrating the opportunities offered by the Information Society and its impact on people's daily lives (to be used to open the IS Day);

- Strong involvement of TV companies to provide simultaneous networked broadcast of the IS Day throughout Europe;

- A "show", aimed at both a live and TV audience, combining music, multimedia, virtual reality, etc.;

- An interactive exhibition targeted at special groups (e.g. the elderly, children at school, etc.) and illustrating how IS applications can improve peoples' lives;

- Involvement of politicians - for preparation and participation in the event (examples of Electronic Democracy, Q&A time (see CNN), videoconference, etc).
