The Fourth European Bielefeld Colloquium will take place in Bielefeld, Germany, from 10 to 12 February 1998. Organized by the Bielefeld University Library, the German "Buchhaendler-Vereinigung" and the British Council in Cologne, the event provides an annual forum for the European publishing and library sectors.

This year's colloquium will focus on the role of publishers and libraries in the Information Society. Well-known experts from the fields of librarianship and publishing will present papers on the latest developments in the provision of information in electronic form. High-level political representatives from the European Union, Norway, Great Britain and Germany are also expected to report on political strategies for the promotion of electronic information supply.

The event is expected to attract some 600 participants from Europe and abroad, with presentations foreseen from approximately 40 exhibitors from the information industry.

A number of presentations will present the Commission's activities with regard to libraries and the role of electronic information in the Information Society. These will include:

- Multimedia information - the European challenge (Mr. Robert Verrue, Director-General of DG XIII - to be confirmed);
- Electronic copyright - the European view (Dr. Jorg Reinbothe, DG XV);
- The European BIBLINK project (Mr. Ross Bourne, Project leader);
- European initiatives for the professional development of librarians (Dr. Hans-Georg Storck, DG XIII);
- A vision for the future - the Green Paper of the European Commission on the role of libraries (speaker to be confirmed).

The "Libraries" sector of the Community's Telematics Applications programme will be represented at a stand presenting documentation produced by the sector and demonstrations of the "Libraries" Web page and CD-ROM.
