In light of the growing importance of nanosciences and the need for coordination of the available expertise in this area, the European Commission is supporting a series of three conferences on "Nanoscience for Nanotechnology" to be held in 1998, 1999 and 2000. The first of these three conferences will be held in Hindsgavl, Denmark, on 16-19 May 1998.

Nanosciences have emerged as one of the areas with vast growth potential in the future. This relatively new field of research has already resulted in the development of a number of "nanotechnologies" and many more are likely to follow. Europe is uniquely positioned to influence this development through its large scientific community, and the inventiveness of its entrepreneurs. One of the major challenges is, however, the coordination of the available expertise.

This first conference in the series aims to establish a number of working groups which will monitor developments in the field and report on these to the next conference, planned for 1999. The specific fields to be covered by this conference will include:

- Materials and nano-chemistry;
- Nano-characterization;
- Nano-instrumentation;
- Nano-lithography;
- Nano-manipulation;
- Nano-machines;
- Microfluids;
- Nano-object theory;
- Nano-heterogeneous materials;
- Nano-crystalline materials;
- Nano-sensorics;
- Molecular recognition;
- Nanoscale physics.

Funds will be available, through the Commission's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, to support participation of young researchers (35 years and under), researchers from Europe's less-favoured regions, and female researchers.
