A symposium on "Soft computing applications in production and material management" will be held in Goettingen, Germany, on 12 March 1998. The symposium is being organized by members of the IRC working group on "Soft computing in business" in collaboration with the University of Goettingen. It is supported by the Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) for Lower Saxony/Saxony-Anhalt.

The symposium, which is strictly application-oriented, will examine the potential of soft computing applications in the management domain. Its objective is to serve as a link between science and practice, focusing on innovative applications and the transfer of know-how.

Topics to be covered will include, but are not limited to:

- Production planning;
- Lot sizing and scheduling;
- Cutting problems;
- Inventory controls;
- Machine diagnosis;
- Data mining;
- Maintenance planning;
- System layout;
- Line balancing;
- Process control and optimization;
- Waste management.
