The 1998 annual seminar of "Energie-Cités", supported by the European Commission, will take place in Barcelona, Spain, on 12 and 13 March 1998. The theme for the conference will be "The opening up of the energy markets, energy management and environment - What roles are there for municipalities in the city of the future?"

The liberalization of European energy markets has changed the general context of economic activities, methods of organization and ways of thinking. Conditions for implementing policies on energy management, the development of renewable energy and the fight against climate change are all affected by Community legislation. European municipalities and their municipal energy supply companies are front-line players in energy, energy management and environmental policies, and this role can only increase in future.

The aim of the seminar is to bring together European municipalities to obtain information, exchange views and discuss the consequences of energy market liberalization at municipal level. Sessions will include contributions from politicians and officers from municipalities and from experts in the energy field.
