An advanced study course on "Concepts and models of marine microbial food webs", supported by the Community's Marine Science and Technology (MAST) research programme, will be held at the Mols Laboratory, Jutland, Denmark, from 27 September to 9 October 1998.

This two-week course, aimed primarily at PhD students in biological oceanography, is designed to provide a detailed overview of present ideas and theories concerning the mechanisms controlling structure and function of pelagic food webs. The main, but not sole, focus will be on microbial aspects of this ecosystem.

The course is intended to introduce students to the interfaces between biological concepts, their formulation in mathematical terms, and exploration of such models by analytical and computer simulation methods.
