Coeliac disease will be the focus of an international event to be held in Tampere, Finland, on 10-12 July 1998. The event will incorporate the 12th Annual Meeting of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) and an international conference on the "Changing features of coeliac disease".

The event, supported by the European Commission within the framework of its specific RTD programme in the field of Biomedicine and Health (BIOMED II), will provide a unique opportunity for patients, doctors, scientists and dieticians from all around the world to gather together to share their interest in various aspects of coeliac disease.

The international conference will concentrate mainly on clinical aspects of coeliac disease. Invited expert speakers will deal with subjects such as associated diseases, screening policy, malignancy, quality of life, osteoporosis, auto-immune diseases, codex standard, food legislation and prolamins in cereals. There will also be an international panel discussion of the topic "Oats and wheat starch in the diet of coeliacs".
