"The Citizen and the Global Information Society" is the theme of a major conference which will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 21 and 22 April 1998. The event is organized by the Confederation of European Computer User Associations (CECUA), with support from the EU's Information Society Project Office (ISPO).

The Information Society is being created in a climate of constant technological change which affects the way people live and work. The conference will focus on the profound changes on social and cultural values, and aims to develop an effective platform for the European citizen to influence global developments and to identify the issues now needing urgent consideration, especially those concerned with the future needs of today's and tomorrow's children.

Keynote speeches will be given by Commissioner Martin Bangemann, Lone Dybkjaer, MEP, and Rolf Skoglund, Vice-President of Ericsson. These will set out the main political, societal and technical issues. Four parallel work groups will consider:

- The political and legal environment;
- Citizens' concerns;
- Opportunities for the citizen;
- Technical expectations.

By the end of the conference, it is intended to draw up an action plan for the establishment of the European dimension of the Global Information Society.
