An international conference entitled "Assessing the ecological integrity of running waters" will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 9-11 November 1998. The conference is being hosted by the University of Agricultural Sciences of Vienna and is supported by the European Commission.

The three-day conference aims to discuss the present state-of-the-art in scientific understanding of the ecological integrity of running waters and its implications for the practical management of rivers. Discussions are intended to assist the European Commission in the reorganization of its river basin management policy based on ecological principles.

Topics to be covered will include:

- Assessing the ecological integrity of running waters: An overview of methods for the assessment of ecological integrity, covering the historical development of assessment methods up to the present day;
- Biotic and abiotic components of running waters: Processes and functions;
- Indicators and assessment methods for aquatic and semi-aquatic environments.
