Safety and security of radiation sources and security of radioactive materials

An international conference on the "Safety and security of radiation sources and the security of radioactive materials" will be held in Dijon, France, from 14 to 18 September 1998. The conference is organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency and is co-sponsored by the European Commission, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and the World Customs Organization (WCO).

The conference is aimed at fostering an exchange of information on two distinct but interrelated subject areas, namely:

- The prevention of accidents involving radiation sources, whether the apparatus that generates the ionizing radiation (such as X-ray tubes and particle accelerators) or the radioactive materials themselves;

- The prevention of theft or any other unauthorized use of radioactive materials and the measures for detecting and responding to the illicit trafficking of these materials.

The conference is targeted at a broad spectrum of experts from national authorities concerned with the control of radiation sources and radioactive materials, and with the radiological and environmental protection at customs, police and other law enforcement agencies, including civil protection.
