The second international conference on the "Development of transport connections between Western Europe, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea" will take place in Sochi, Russia, on 2 and 3 April 1998. The event is organized by the Russian Transport Ministry and the Hellenic Chambers Transport Association, with support from the European Commission.

The aim of the conference is to continue the exchange of opinions between the authorities responsible for the design and drafting of policy guidelines governing transport in the region, the private sector, and other interested parties. This process was launched at the first conference, held in Piraeus in 1996.

The aim of the process is to provide an opportunity for discussion of the present situation, recent developments and the needs of transport systems in the region. It should also serve to attract the attention of national and international financial institutions and private investors to priority transport projects in the area. Finally, it will also facilitate, through cooperation, the solution of problems and the promotion of a regional approach for efficient, inter-operable and inter-connected transport systems, taking into account the decisions of the third Pan-European Transport Conference, held in Helsinki, in 1997.
