A conference on "The Kyoto outcome" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 24 March 1998. The conference, organized by COGEN Europe, examines the implications of the Kyoto Protocol on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, drawn up during the Climate Change Conference held in Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997.

The conference is aimed at those involved in the energy sector, and particularly at those in the electricity sector, considered to be the easiest target for post-Kyoto policy-makers. Speakers from the European Commission, the European Parliament and industry will explain the contents, targets and so-called "flexibility clauses" of the Kyoto Protocol, and highlight those areas which remain unclear - particularly emissions trading, the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation.

The seminar will also present views on who might be the winners and losers from the implementation of Kyoto, and how energy companies might position themselves to exploit best whatever emerges from the Protocol.
