An International Symposium on Marine Pollution will be held in Monaco from 5 to 9 October 1998. Organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and hosted by the Principality of Monaco, the Symposium is co-sponsored by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Held during this International Year of the Ocean, the symposium will review recent achievements in marine pollution studies and present the results of cooperation between international and national organizations in the field. The event will provide an important forum for evaluating the state of the marine environment, defining the current scientific understanding of the impact of marine pollution and improving risk assessment approaches. Scientific and technical priorities for achieving those objectives will be identified.
