An international conference on "The role of universities for sustainable development" will be held in Cracow, Poland, on 8-10 June 1998. The conference is being organized by the European Association of Universities (CRE) as part of its "Cooperation Programme in Europe for Research on Nature and Industries through Coordinated University Studies" (COPERNICUS) - not to be confused with the EU's COPERNICUS programme.

The conference will bring together teachers, researchers, students and administrators from universities across Europe to review progress and activities relating to the promotion of sustainable development - particularly within the context of the implementation of Agenda 21, the action plan for improving the world's environment agreed by governments at the Rio Summit in June 1992.

Discussion will focus on topics such as interdisciplinary teaching, environmental university management and the implementation of the Charter. The event should allow universities to reflect on their role in the promotion of sustainable development and enable them to define new targets in this area.
