The "Vienna Calling" East-West Telematics Congress and European Workshop for Best Practice in Urban Telematics Development, the central feature of Global Village '98 (25-29 March) will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 26-27 March 1998.

The East-West Telematics Congress is aimed at telematics experts from Western and Eastern Europe. Its objective is to present a detailed overview of the current communications infrastructure and technology in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEECs) and to provide a forum for discussion on the latest developments in the field. Opportunities provided by the EU with regard to East-West cooperation in telematics will, in particular, be highlighted.

The European workshop for "Best practices in urban telematics development" will present in greater detail European experiences with regard to the development of telematics applications in urban environments. The workshop will incorporate six sub-workshops, highlighting specific project examples:

- The Networking Neighbourhood (Helsingborg, Sweden);
- High Bandwidth Government (Antwerp, Belgium);
- The Acedemia creates Internet Awareness (Nyiregyhaza, Hungary);
- Building an interactive virtual community (Bologna, Italy);
- Information Society for all (South-East London, UK);
- The hidden treasure of public databases (Vienna, Austria).
