A European training course on the "Use of biotic indexes to evaluate the quality of freshwater streams: a comparison among four different European methods" will be held in S. Michele a/Adige, Italy, from 22 to 27 June 1998.

The course is part of a series of five European Training Courses on water quality measurements coordinated by TECHWARE (Belgium) and supported by the European Commission within the framework of its specific RTD programme in the field of Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT).

The aims of the course include:

- Promoting the use of biotic methods in evaluating the quality of surface waters;

- Stimulating a comparison among the different procedures used by European countries, including: IBE (Italy), BBI (Belgium), BMWP (Spain) and RIVPACS (UK);

- Considering practical aspects and problems relating to sampling and identification techniques.
