ETAPS'98, the European conference on Theory and Practice of Software, will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 28 March to 4 April 1998. The event is the first in a planned annual series aimed at both academic and industrial researchers in the software science fields.

The conference, which is supported by the EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, will cover a wide range of topics, and over 100 papers are due to be presented. In addition, seven invited lectures will be given, whilst nine tutorials and four thematic workshops will also be held. The main topics to be covered are:

- Foundations of software science and computation structures;
- Fundamental approaches to software engineering;
- European symposium on programming;
- International conference on compiler construction;
- Tools and algorithms for the construction and analysis of systems.

The four workshops will address the themes of advanced communications services; visualization issues for formal methods; co-algebraic methods in computer science; and algebraic development techniques.
