EUROAMERITEL'98, a joint conference, involving South American and European countries, on "developing cooperation in telematics for health care and education and training", will be held in Santiago, Chile, from 10 to 12 June 1998.

The conference is being organized as part of the LABORTEL project, an accompanying measure of the Telematics Applications programme funded by the European Commission. EUROAMERITEL'98 aims at exploring means of cooperation between the EU and Latin American companies.

It has been designed to meet the needs and specific interests of key actors from both continents, who are responsible for expanding their markets and implementing new technologies. The main themes to be covered include:

- Overview of the South American market and its development perspectives;
- European research and development programmes;
- Development strategies of European companies in South America;
- Cooperation to be developed between health, education and training organizations for the exploitation of telematics technology;
- Joint business to be developed between Latin America and European industrialists for telematics in both sectors;
- Exploration of funding sources to support joint projects;
- Technology transfer mechanisms;
- Presentation of both European and Latin American projects based on telematics in health care and education and training.

The conference addresses, in the main, representatives of relevant Ministries, health professionals' organizations, hospitals, universities and research laboratories, large industrial companies, media, and telecom operators in Latin America. On the European side, a selection of participants from the Telematics Applications programme including industrialists, telecom operators, publishers, media companies and major suppliers in the health informatics market will present and promote their achievements and opportunities in this field.
