Cohesion, competitiveness, RTD and innovation: Their impact on regions

A conference on cohesion, competitiveness, research, technological development and innovation, and their impact on regions will take place in Maastricht, The Netherlands, on 28 and 29 May 1998. The conference is organized by the Dutch province of Limburg and the European Commission.

The conference is aimed at representatives of regional authorities, companies, intermediary organizations and others who are interested in the impact of EU policy on the competitiveness of their region.

The conference will be organized with both parallel and plenary sessions and will include a panel discussion. It will also include an "information market" to ensure the exchange of experience and knowledge, to build up networks and to learn from examples in other regions to strengthen regional competitiveness. Topics to be presented during the plenary sessions include:

- The concept of regional competitiveness;
- Structural Funds, cohesion policy and regional competitiveness;
- Research, technological development and innovation, the Fifth RTD Framework Programme and regional competitiveness;
- Competitiveness and regional environment.

The parallel sessions will cover the following topics:

- Regional competitiveness and less-favoured regions;
- Regional competitiveness and Central and Eastern European regions;
- Regional competitiveness and industrial regions;
- Regional competitiveness and rural regions.
