A symposium on North Sea modelling activities will be held in Hamburg, Germany, on 6 May 1998. The symposium, financially supported by the EU's Marine Science and Technology (MAST) programme, is organized by the University of Hamburg. It is a follow-up to the North Sea symposium, held in Hamburg in 1996.

The aim is to promote North Sea modelling activities by comparing them with modelling activities in other shelf areas. The symposium should help improve existing North Sea modelling strategies such as model nesting or model coupling. The results of the German projects (KUSTOS and TRANSWATT), developed as a result of the 1996 symposium will also be discussed. Other subjects for discussion include:

- Pure hydro-dynamic modelling activities;
- Simulation of suspended matter transport;
- The importance of shelf modelling with respect to down-scaling of GCM information;
- American shelf modelling strategies.

This symposium is strongly related to other EU-supported shelf sea modelling activities, such as the MAST projects PROFILE and XTRANS, and the concerted actions MMARIE and NOMADS. These projects have already provided a good insight into the strengths and weaknesses of European modelling activities.
