The third European symposium on rural and farming systems analyses will be held in Stuttgart, Germany, from 25 to 27 March 1998. The symposium is organized by the Association for Farming Systems Research-Extension European Group (AFSRE) and the University of Hohenheim.

The symposium will open with a plenary session involving presentations from representatives of the European Commission, the University of Hohenheim, NATURA, and AFSRE. This will be followed by a series of five workshops. The concluding plenary session will include reports of the findings and conclusions from each workshop. The workshops will address the following topics:

- Concepts and approaches for integrating environmental perspectives;
- Management strategies for coping with the environment;
- Use of local resources for rural development;
- The role of institutions in managing ecosystems;
- Farming and rural systems in zones of transition.
