Education and training in integrated coastal area management

An international conference on "Education and Training in Integrated Coastal Area Management: the Mediterranean Prospect" will be held in Genoa, Italy, from 25 to 29 May 1998. The conference is organized by the International Centre for Coastal and Ocean Policy Studies (ICCOPS), with support from the European Commission (DG XII) and a number of international organizations. The event will be sponsored under the European Commission's Marine Science and Technology (MAST) programme.

The aims of the conference include:

- Serving as a consultative ground;
- Monitoring, presenting and discussing the experiences in the Mediterranean in this field;
- Discussing the possible harmonization of initiatives and programmes;
- Discussing new types of education and training programmes, tailored to the Mediterranean;
- Focusing on epistemological, methodological and pedagogic issues;
- Designing patterns to optimize the capacity to build education and training programmes;
- Discussing the issue of human resources;
- Optimizing cooperation between intergovernmental organizations, mainly the UN and the EU;
- Using the Mediterranean experience to optimize education and training in integrated coastal management in other regional seas.

The main topics to be covered will include:

- The scientific approach and the role of inter-governmental organizations;
- The role of scientific institutions and NGOs;
- Technical tools for coastal education and training;
- Coastal geographical information systems;
- The Mediterranean model, a master in integrated coastal management.
