European hearing on digital signatures and encryption

A European expert hearing on digital signatures and encryption will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 23 and 24 April 1998. The hearing is organized by the Danish Government, in close cooperation with the European Commission, DG XIII.

The aim of the hearing is to clarify specific questions on the development and use of digital signatures and encryption. This should provide the basis for further political discussions on these issues, including the discussions on the forthcoming EU Directive on digital signatures.

It will also provide a forum where experts from industry, the academic world and government can discuss questions of market trends, business needs and legal questions. It should provide the opportunity for the European cryptography industry to meet governments and discuss opportunities and barriers for industry. There will also be the opportunity for industry to exhibit digital signature and encryption products and projects, with this exhibition open to the public during the hearing.

The hearing is divided into eight sessions, covering the following:

- Market trends and business experience;
- Global market trends on cryptography from the information technology industry perspective;
- Business use of cryptography;
- The European cryptography industry;
- Electronic authentication and digital signatures;
- Common requirements;
- Legal recognition;
- Liability.
