The Research and Development Management Conference 1998 will be held in Avila, Spain, from 30 September to 2 October 1998. The conference is jointly organized and sponsored by Fundación COTEC, a Spanish foundation for research and development, SOCINTEC, a Spanish management consultancy, R&D Management magazine, and the Manchester Business School.

Fundación COTEC, SOCINTEC and the Manchester Business School are partners in a project funded by the Innovation Management Techniques section of the EU's INNOVATION programme, entitled "Development of a Toolkit to Promote Methodological Guidelines in Technology Management and its Dissemination in European Companies" (TEMAGUIDE), launched in January 1997, which will be discussed during the conference.

The conference will examine various aspects of strategy and alliances which have the potential to be a powerful factor in research and development, technology and innovation management. It will involve an examination of relevant concepts and themes, a discussion of the practical problems that might be experienced and consideration of the implications for research and development management.

Topics to be covered within the overall theme may include:

- Working effectively in strategic alliances;
- Finding synergy and strategy in an alliance;
- Working with technology suppliers;
- Smaller company perspectives: innovation, research and development projects and supply chain contracts;
- Resource allocation and project evaluation;
- Reengineering an established partnership agreement;
- Alliances between competitors;
- Exploiting non-core capabilities;
- Managing alliances in the value chain;
- Knowledge management and intellectual capital;
- An alliance as a client for research and technology institutes and universities;
- Networks, virtual organizations and information technology.
