The European Commission, DG XII, has published an activity report on COST actions in the field of chemistry in 1995 and 1996. These Chemistry Actions were launched in 1991 within the COST initiative for European cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research. At the moment, the Chemistry Actions involve participants from 22 of the COST member countries. Over 140 projects, involving more than 700 research groups, are covered by the COST Chemistry Actions which have a total budget of ECU 500 million. The aim of this activity report is to give an idea of the level of collaborative research underway. The report documents specific COST Chemistry Actions and contains information on their objectives, duration, specific projects and contact details for the project management committees. The following COST Chemistry Actions are covered: - D1: Coordination chemistry in the context of biological and environmental studies; - D2: Selective synthesis; - D3: Theory and modelling of chemical systems and processes; - D4: Design and preparation of new molecular systems with unconventional electrical, optical and magnetic properties; - D5: Chemistry at surfaces and interfaces; - D6: Chemical processes and reactions under extreme or non-classic conditions; - D7: Molecular recognition chemistry. The following new COST Actions in chemistry were launched in 1997/1998, and can be expected to run at least until 2001 or 2002: - D8: Chemistry of metals in medicine; - D9: Advanced computational chemistry of increasingly complex systems; - D10: Innovative methods and techniques for chemical transformations; - D11: Supramolecular chemistry; - D12: Organic transformations, selective processes and asymmetric catalysis.
