The first compendium of research projects related to space carried out under the EU's Fourth RTD Framework Programme has recently been published. The aim of the report is to show the European Union's contribution to research for promoting and safeguarding the economic interests of the space sector. It also provides a useful input into the planned Fifth RTD Framework Programme and will be used to define targets in the promotion of space applications under this new Programme. Rather than providing a definitive collection of all space projects funded under the Fourth Framework Programme, the intention is to give an impression of the range and style of projects supported. The projects documented range from the use of satellite data to study climate change to the development of generic software applied in launchers, and from distance learning to tele-medicine using satellites. The report includes a summary and results for each project, contact details for the project coordinator, as well as details of the duration and budget of the project. Projects from the following programmes are included in the report: - The Space Applications Institute (SAI) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre; - Information Technologies (ESPRIT) research programme; - TRANSPORT research programme; - Cooperation with third countries and international organizations (INCO); - Industrial Materials and Technologies (BRITE-EURAM) research programme; - Environment and Climate research programme; - Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) research programme; - Telematics Applications programme.
