In order to monitor the incorporation of thorium and uranium by workers and the general public, the European Commission, DG XI, has published an invitation to tender for a study to assess workplaces where such incorporation may occur. It will cover control and monitoring methods which are used for the assessment of incorporation by inhalation or ingestion. Comparison of the different methods available should be emphasised, in view of the lowest detection level, precision, and feasibility for use of the methods in routine and operational radiation protection. The study should also provide information on the potential for developments for the detection of extremely low activities. Methods should describe how the committed effective dose could be assessed after measuring the intake of uranium and thorium with the different monitoring techniques. Tender documents may be obtained on written request, quoting reference XI/C1/ETU/980062, from: European Commission DG XI - Environment, nuclear safety and civil protection Mr. B.
