In the context of the preparation of a European Environment and Health conference to be held in London, United Kingdom, in June 1999, the European Commission, DG XI, has published an invitation to tender for a study that aims at developing a new approach to the relationship between environment and health. Until now, this topic has always been studied in a fragmented way, examining, for instance, the effects of single air pollutants on human health without taking into account the combined effects of pollutants or the cumulative effects of pollutants in air, water or contaminated food. The study should therefore help to define a more global and integrated approach to identifying the existing interactions between various environmental factors and their effects on human health. This should also cover the methodology needed to implement such an approach at a European level.
