Innovative success at the Joint Research Centre
The winning projects in the German contest for entrepreneurs from higher education (EXIST) were selected by the German Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology on 26 August 1998. The five winners were chosen from more than 100 proposals from the different regions in Germany. The winning project (KEIM), was proposed by five main partners: - Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU), Karlsruhe (EU Joint Research Centre); - Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe; - Universität Karlsruhe; - Fachhochschule Karlsruhe; - Fachhochschule Pforzheim; - TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe. In the KEIM project, over 80 institutes will collaborate to develop initiatives aimed at creating new "spin-off" companies arising from work in public research centres and higher education. The initiatives will include training and education in entrepreneurship, mentorship schemes, support for the development of prototypes and business plans and innovation financing. This involvement of the ITU institute is part of the JRC's efforts to foster technology transfer and innovation stemming from its research results in support of EU innovation policy. It is also coherent with the Commission's First Action Plan for Innovation in Europe.
