ABIMA Knee research

This project focuses on developing a multibody model of the human knee that will make it possible to estimate cartilage loading in response to loading conditions characteristic of human physical activity.

This project focuses on developing a multibody model of the human knee that will make it possible to estimate cartilage loading in response to loading conditions characteristic of human physical activity. To ensure realistic and accurate knee loading, forces are being calculated using a whole-body skeleton and muscle model that mimics natural human motion as recorded using motion capture techniques. Knee cartilage and meniscus are being modeled as elastic bodies with contact; an arrangement that allows for efficient multibody dynamics modeling of the forces transmitted through the knee. In post-processing, a detailed knee simulation based on the finite element method will be performed to calculate stress distribution over the cartilage surface. The results of this project work will be directly applicable to knee implant design and knee surgery planning.
