The European Commission, Directorate General XI, is seeking tenders for a study in the context of waste management policy to survey wastes spread on land. The study will cover the fifteen EU Member States in order to: - Provide a quantitative and, where this is not possible, a qualitative estimate of the amount of waste that is currently being spread on land either as a recovery or as a disposal operation; - Gather relevant information on the forms of studies, articles and statistics on the possible environmental drawbacks because of the spreading of these wastes. Attention should be given to heavy metals, organic compounds and pathogens; - Make a survey of national applicable legislation and regulations, and evaluate whether they are correctly enforced and sufficient for satisfying article 4 of Directive 75/442/EEC as amended; - Suggest what kinds of action are required at Community level in order to ensure a high level of protection of the environment. More information about the particular kinds of waste the Commission is most interested in is given in the text of the invitation to tender in the Official Journal.
