The European Commission, DG XI, has published an open invitation to tender for the management of the secretariat of the European Environment Awards. The awards are intended to give well-deserved recognition to companies which have introduced environmental practices that go beyond legal requirements. The awards can also be seen as creating incentives for companies to improve environmental policies and involve more stakeholders in this improvement. The first European Environment Awards were made in 1987 and the scheme is underpinned by a system of national awards organised by independent partners in the 15 Member States. The secretariat's role is to adapt the organisational structure of the European Environment Awards, ensure that the award categories reflect current trends in business development and environmental policies, and finally to make the awards widely known within the European business community and the media. The secretariat's work will cover the following items: - Coordination and management; - Research and strategic development; - Networking; - Promotion; - Arrangements for the ceremony. Tenders will be assessed on a range of criteria, including tenderers' experience in environmental policy and business development. The successful candidate will therefore have experience of working with business development, innovation and public information in the field of environment.
