INTER-IoT project to develop integrated solutions for the Internet of Things

Shorter waiting lists at health centres, optimised hospital spending and improved remote outpatient care. These are just some of the objectives set by the researchers behind INTER-IoT, an EU-funded project led by the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). They will harness the full potential of the Internet of Things to connect otherwise disconnected or incompatible devices and systems often run by different organisations and, by doing so, improve their efficiency.

Beyond the health sector, the project also sets ambitious objectives for transportation and port logistics, addressing CO2 emissions, transport times, and security and control issues.

Speaking from the UPV’s Distributed Real-Time Systems and Applications (SATRD) research group, lead researcher and project coordinator Carlos Palau tells us: “Health and port logistics are the two areas the project will initially focus on, though the scope could be extended to any field where there was a need to connect different architectures of the Internet of Things”.

Connected Smart Objects

INTER-IoT researchers will be developing mechanisms and software that enable information to be exchanged between different Internet of Things platforms, overcoming technological and organisational hurdles inherent between systems implemented by different bodies. Indeed, one of the main tangible outcomes of the project will be a methodology (procedures, tools, etc.) for achieving interoperability not only at the level of the devices, networks and services, but also at the semantic level.

Project kick-off

The first project meeting took place at the UPV’s science park, Ciudad Politècnica de Innovación, in January this year. At this meeting project partners agreed on criteria relating to the definition of user and technical requirements. “Additionally we analysed the two areas of application specified in the project proposal, the health sector and port logistics, as well as analysing the project in terms of the market” (Palau).
INTER-IoT brings together 14 organisations from seven countries: Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Poland and Slovenia, led by the Universitat Politècnica de València. Valencia Port Foundation is also contributing to this project, as are Noatum Container Terminal Valencia and Valencia-based software developers Prodevelop.

INTER-IoT, as the project is known and led by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, was the highest scoring of the 136 proposals submitted to its funding call.
