The Commission has announced a call for proposals to prevent drug dependence as part of the implementation of a programme for Community action in this area, which has been in place since 1996. The call embraces two areas. The first aims to improve knowledge about drugs and drug addiction. To do this, researchers would draw on information supplied by the European Drugs Monitoring Centre (EDMC) and resources from current Community programmes and instruments. A second objective is to examine how to prevent dependence and its associated risks, and proposals should incorporate plans to improve information, education and training. They should target young people in relevant environments (such as school, home, university and leisure time), particularly vulnerable groups, including former drug users. The Commission will give priority to proposals whose actions fall within the scope of the annual work programme already set out for 2000.
